epic pie #1

March 18, 2009

so, more on the legend that is/was pie.  led by the inimitable hugh dickey, pie were (or at least, should have been) rock gods.  seriously, these guys were cranking out anthemic jams of the highest order.  though this little EP, dustbowl, is perhaps less anthemic, and more just good, casiofied 4-trackings.  i never was that into GBV – i dunno why, it always seemed like the kind of shit i’d eat up back then – but for me, pie’s 4-track rock excursions and doses of weirdness were where it was at.

this is one of my all-time favorite cactus gum releases, hands down.  hugh sent a tape with seven songs on it to me back in 1995 and told me to pick one for the first cgum compilation, hide & go seek.  i ended up using “u will b interred” mainly because of the line you crawled in like a cow.  i didn’t know (still don’t know!) how a cow crawled anywhere and just thought it was a great fucking song.  but the whole tape was incredible, so i asked him if i could put it out and he was super enthusiastic.  so the pie/cactus gum connection was cemented.  i went on to release two other pie tapes (upside the d-lux bee chamber and @ the electric spa as well as two simp (hugh solo) albums (scotch, no cigarette and on the wrong planet).  the quality of the music on all of that stuff is ridiculous.  pie had another great tape on shrimper and a handful of 7″s, plus a proper CD.  it was all good.  seriously good.

bonus fun fact: my old band, ocasek, did not name itself after ric, but after the pie song on the dustbowl ep.  we narrowed it down to ocasek and bush 2, flipped a coin and settled on the former.  perhaps the latter would have been a sign of the treachery to come…

Oh yea! Definitely should have been huge. Pie were one of my favs as well, I’ve got both the cassettes and 7″ you released – as well as ‘Strictly Seance’- however, one of my fav tracks is ‘Her Gleam’, it was on a Darla comp.

I once read a review tat descibed Mogwai as MBV’s big brother come to beat you up – well, on that track, Pie was the BIGGER brother.
What a song! Thanks for pushing the pie barrow…

I found this when trying to search for information about this band. I found their album “Strictly Seance” on by chance when my school’s radio station was switching to digital and was throwing out all of their physical media. This album has proven to be one of my “go to” listens. I absolutely love the sound. It’s great to know more about the people behind the music.
