from the archives vol. 1

March 8, 2009

another thing i want to do with this site/blog is post various mp3s from the days of my first foray into labelhood.  not necessarily all my own experiments, but also just rare/old tape stuff from the mid-90s cassette daze on labels that were bigtime influences to me like catsup plate, shrimper, union pole, ef tapes, et al.

there will also be some tape releases of old material of mine from my teen years.  i don’t know if anyone will care about them, but i’ve been going through boxes of old 4track tapes recently and found some stuff that takes me back and i think is worthwhile on some level and would like to document it physically, even if it’s on a very small level.

anyway, first up from the archives is a short but very sweet track from THE AZUSA PLANE.  jason di emilio (r.i.p.) was one of the most awesome dudes around, and his guitar drones were soaring fucking masterpieces.  i was extremely lucky that he contributed to three compilations i put out. here’s two of those tracks:

“erone” from chutes & ladders c90 compilation

“nebraska” from north america vs. europe double c92 compilation

he was also on the whiskey you’re the devil CD compilation i put out.  such a great dude who is sorely missed.  the azusa plane defined space rock for me.  more than flying saucer attack.  more than füxa.  more than even windy & carl. more than any of them.

I love this stuff too, Brad. Thanks for uploading. I’ll be keeping my eye on this page like a hawk.

Can’t wait for DSQ001 to arrive..

thanks man! just figured out the RSS feed so people can ‘subscribe’ if they want. admittedly i still have no idea how that all works, but i reckon most people are a little more tech-saavy than i. ha!

two azusa tracks i havent heard yet – and particulary Erone is stunning. don’t you feel the urge to put an azusa plane retrospective box set together?

and the rss works fine – subscribed right away 😎

cheers wim! an azusa plane retrospective box would be incredible… it’s amazing, 10+ years later and there’s tons more people doing guitar drone/ambient stuff, but the more i listen to jason’s stuff, the more i realize how on some level he (w/ roy montgomery, perhaps) is like the forefather of it all. it’s just amazing, timeless stuff. got a good rip of the shrimper tape over the weekend, so that’ll go up this week.

what are the other tracks you’re missing btw? i’ve got a ton of his 7″s somewhere and as soon as i get a long-enough RCA cable, will rip some vinyl.

    hey brad,

pretty much have all of the 7″ i know of (15-20 or so?) – apart from the split 7″ with octal, and the comp 7″ on mind expansion. i also lack the 12″ on blackbean, and i miss a whole lot of comp appearances, but gave up on looking for all of those – untill hearing ‘erone’. 😉

now roy montogomery is back on stage (he does a show later this week with pumice and grouper!), i think it’s about time for an (even modest) azusa revival.
